Teen Girl Scouts Named to National Youth Advisory Council
Girls to Serve on Youth Voice of Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls
WASHINGTON, June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Girl Scouts of the USA is pleased to announce that eight girls have been selected to serve on the national Youth Advisory Council of the Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls. The Commission is chaired by Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis and Former FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate, and will convene media industry leaders to examine the images shown to children. The Youth Advisory Council for the Commission will host youth efforts in promoting healthy images of women and girls in the media.
Girl Scout CEO, Kathy Cloninger, said, "Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place and who speak about what's important to them, like media images. It's essential that as we continue our efforts to engage Media Industry leadership and Policy Makers in the discussion on the types of images we are putting in front our children, that we engage our girls as well."
The teen Girl Scouts chosen for the Youth Advisory council are: Allie Lundell and Jasmine Dent of Maryland, Caitlin Claire O'Brien of Texas, Kulsoom Ahmed of Illinois, Katie McGrath, Maggie Burgos and Caroline Tydings of Virginia, and Toni Guiterriez of California.
The Girl Scouts will report directly to the, Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls.
The Commission will:
- Host the national discussion on best practices to promote positive and balanced images of girls and women.
- Convene industry leaders, subject-matter experts, youth representatives, media leadership, and the creative community to develop a blueprint on how to create a positive media environment for kids.
- Produce concrete recommendations to media and policy leaders.
- Champion media leaders who are promoting positive content and balanced images of girls and women.
- Work to secure industry-wide, public commitments to take steps toward positive change.

Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls was launched by the Girl Scouts of the USA, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), and The Creative Coalition.
