Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2016; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants
NEW YORK, June 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc. announced the eight winners of the 2016 Teddy Gleason Scholarships. The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA Secretary-Treasurer, Stephen Knott filling in for ILA President, Harold Daggett and NYSA President John Nardi, introduced the students at a luncheon on June 28, 2016 at Bobby Van's Steak House in Lower Manhattan.
All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and New Jersey. This is the thirty-sixth annual scholarship program. Students will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years in college.
The 2016 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:
Alexander Amaral
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Mario Amaral of Brooklyn, NJ. Mr. Amaral is a member of Local 1 working at Global Container Terminal Bayonne. Alexander plans to attend the Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.
Alexis Ciccone
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Ciccone of Clark, NJ. Mr. Ciccone is a member of ILA Local 1, working at various terminals. Alexis plans to attend St. John's University in Jamaica, NY.
Damian Dudek
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Gregory Dudek of Stewartsville, NJ. Mr. Dudek is a member of ILA Local 1 working at Maher Terminals. Damian plans to attend Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.
William Haracz
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haracz of Little Falls, NJ. Mr. Haracz is a member of ILA Local 1, working at APM Terminals. William plans to attend Fordham University in New York, NY.
William Kuncken
Son of Mr. & Mrs. William Kuncken of Point Pleasant, NJ. Mr. Kuncken is a member of ILA Local 1, working at Maher Terminals. William plans to attend Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.
Brandon Tarabocchia
Son of Mr. & Mrs. James Taraboccia of Howell, NJ. Mr. Taraboccia is a member of ILA Local 1, working at Ports America. Brandon plans to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
Kaitlin Bussanich
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Shawn Bussanich of Ramsey, NJ. Mr. Bussanich is a member of ILA Local 1235, working at APM Terminals. Kaitlin plans to attend The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, NJ.
Evan Garrahy
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Garrahy of Monroe, NY. Mr. Garrahy is a member of ILA Local 1814, working at Global Container Terminals, New York. Evan plans to attend Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. An independent agency – the College Scholarship Service based in Princeton, New Jersey – makes the selection of the scholarship winners.
The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981 following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
