Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2013; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants
NEW YORK, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc. today announced the eight winners of the 2013 Teddy Gleason Scholarships. The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA General Vice President, Stephen Knott filling in for ILA President, Harold Daggett and NYSA President John Nardi, introduced the students at a luncheon on June 24, 2013 at Bobby Van's Steak House in Lower Manhattan.
All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and New Jersey. This is the thirty-third annual scholarship program. Students will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years in college.
The 2013 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:
BRIANNA BORAGI
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Boragi of Staten Island, New York, Mr. Boragi is a member of ILA Local 1 working at New York Container Terminal. Brianna plans to attend St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA.
DEBORAH M. CHIN
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Chin of Iselin, New Jersey, Mr. Chin is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at Ports America, Inc. Deborah's brother Anthony was a recipient of the 2009 Scholarship Award. Deborah plans to attend the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island.
AMANDA M. CICCONE
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Ciccone of Clark, New Jersey, Mr. Ciccone is a member of ILA Local 1 working at various bulk cargo operators.. Amanda plans to attend East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
REBECCA FIGUEIRAS
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Juan Figueiras of North Arlington, New Jersey, Mr. Figueiras is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Rebecca plans to attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
NICOLO A. HRONCICH
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Nicolo A. Hroncich, Sr. of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, Mr. Hroncich is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Nicolo plans to attend the University of Miami in Miami, Florida.
GABRIELLE NALEWAJEK
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Krzysztof Nalewajek of Bayonne, New Jersey, Mr. Nalewajek is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Gabrielle plans to attend Philadelphia University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
ALEXIS D. VENTOSO
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alberto Ventoso, Mr. Ventoso is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Alexis plans to attend the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida.
JULIANNE VESCE
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Vesce of Mahwah, New Jersey, Mr. Vesce is a member of ILA Local 1814 working at New York Container Terminal, Inc. Julianne's brother Anthony was a recipient of the 2010 Scholarship Award. Julianne plans to attend Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.
The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. An independent agency – the College Scholarship Service based in Princeton, New Jersey – makes the selection of the scholarship winners.
The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981 following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
