Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2012; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants
NEW YORK, June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc. today announced the eight winners of the 2012 Teddy Gleason Scholarships. The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA President, Harold Daggett and NYSA President Joseph Curto, introduced the students at a luncheon on June 18, 2012 at Bobby Van's Steak House in Lower Manhattan.
All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and New Jersey. This is the thirty-third annual scholarship program. Students will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years in college.
The 2012 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:
BENITO A. BASILE
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Francesco Basile of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Basile is a member of ILA Local 1814 working at Red Hook Terminal. Benito plans to attend St. John's University in Jamaica, New York.
ANDREA M. BONDURA
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bondura of Middletown, New Jersey, Mr. Bondura is a member of ILA Local 1 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Andrea plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
JAKE A. BRUNO
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Bruno of Maywood, New Jersey, Mr. Bruno is a member of ILA Local 1 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Jake plans to attend University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
ALEXANDRA T. HARACZ
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Haracz of Little Falls, New Jersey, Mr. Haracz is a member of ILA Local 1 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Alexandra plans to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
MICHELE L. MILLER
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Miller of Avenel, New Jersey, Mr. Miller is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Michele plans to attend Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, New Jersey.
DOMINIC T. SARGEANT
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Daryl Sargeant, of Millburn, New Jersey, Mr. Sargeant is a member of ILA Local 1233 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Dominic plans to attend University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
JAILYN N. SUGGS
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robin Suggs of Easton, Pennsylvania, Mr. Suggs is a member of ILA Local 1233 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Jailyn plans to attend University of East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania.
AALIYAH M. WELLS
Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Devin Wells of Sayreville, New Jersey, Mr. Wells is a member of ILA Local 1233 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Aaliyah plans to attend Montclair State University, in Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. An independent agency – the College Scholarship Service based in Princeton, New Jersey – makes the selection of the scholarship winners.
The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981 following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
