Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2010; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants
NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc. today announced the eight winners of the 2010 Teddy Gleason Scholarships. The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA Executive Vice President, Harold Daggett and NYSA President Joseph Curto, introduced the students at a luncheon on June 22, 2010 at Bobby Van's Steak House in Lower Manhattan.
All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and New Jersey. This is the thirtieth annual scholarship program. Students will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years in college.
The 2010 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:
Matthew W. Kaczor: Son of Mr. & Mrs. John Kaczar of Union, New Jersey. Mr. Kaczor is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Matthew plans to attend New York University in New York, New York.
Lauren A. Lodato: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Lodato of Union, New Jersey. Mr. Lodato is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Lauren plans to attend Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Stephanie M. Oliveira: Daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Francisco Oliveira of Edison, New Jersey. Mr. Oliveira is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Stephanie plans to attend The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey.
Steven J. Prezioso: Son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Prezioso of Keansburg, New Jersey. Mr. Prezioso is a member of ILA Local 1 working at Global Terminals, Inc. Steven plans to attend Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.
Christopher J. Radici: Son of Mr. & Mrs. Umberto Radici of Emerson, New Jersey. Mr. Radici is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at Maher Terminals, Inc. Christopher plans to attend Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey.
Jennifer M. Suarez: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Suarez of Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Mr. Suarez is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Jennifer plans to attend Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Daniela Valles: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fernando Valles of North Bergen, New Jersey. Mr. Valles is a member of ILA Local 1233 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Daniela plans to attend Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Anthony P. Vesce: Son of Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Vesce Sr. of Mahwah, New Jersey. Mr. Vesce is a member of ILA Local 1814 working at New York Container Terminals, Inc. Anthony plans to attend Penn State in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. An independent agency – the College Scholarship Service based in Princeton, New Jersey – makes the selection of the scholarship winners.
The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981 following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
