TECHO Creates "Pop-Up Slum" in New York City for Poverty Awareness Campaign
NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- TECHO, in partnership with Pace University, Univision and Oxfam, will host a three-day conference as part of the Poverty Awareness Campaign (http://www.zeroslums.org). It includes a series of events, bringing together local organizations, intergovernmental agencies and academics to work towards overcoming global poverty and inequality.
A TECHO-created "pop-up slum" was created at 1 Pace Plaza, at Pace University. The purpose of the installation is to encourage the public to learn about the conditions people face daily in slums. It is on display from Oct. 6-8 and includes stories from those that live in these slums.
"People living in poverty need help, but also opportunities. They need spaces to exchange ideas, to be included in the conversation. As TECHO, we are certain that they themselves have the best ideas and solutions to overcome their own situation," said Juan Cristobal Beytia, President of TECHO.
"Slum Apartment" is another initiative from the Poverty Awareness Campaign. A replication of an informal settlement was created in a studio apartment in Union Square up for rent. The ensuing Facebook video records the surprised reactions of New Yorkers who visited the apartment's open house. It quickly went viral and already boasts more than 500 thousand views.
