Technology that Changes Lives
Video Documentary Features Shelby Nurse, a 19-year-old with Cerebral Palsy on an Educational Journey with the Help of Assistive Technology
NATICK, Mass., April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cambium Learning® Technologies is pleased to announce the release of a video featuring the nineteen year journey of Shelby Nurse, a psychology major at St. Petersburg College. In the video, viewers enter the world of a remarkable young woman who doesn't let her cerebral palsy stop her from living a life filled with promise. Shelby and her father, Tom, believe that the access to assistive technology helps "level the playing field" and provide Shelby with the ability to have her cognitive abilities shine through.
Shelby was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was a year old. When she entered school, her father realized "that by grade 2 the academic bus was leaving and Shelby wasn't going to be on it," not because she lacked intelligence but because she struggled due to limited fine motor skills. The family turned to several publishers of assistive technology for support. Products that significantly changed the course of her educational path were IntelliKeys®, an alternative keyboard, in addition to the IntelliTools suite of early learning products, and Kurzweil 3000™, by Kurzweil Educational Systems®, a text-to-speech software program which gave Shelby the tools to read, comprehend and digest large quantities of text.
Without Kurzweil 3000, Shelby can only read three or four paragraphs before visual fatigue overwhelms her. With Kurzweil 3000, Shelby is able to read her full assignments, sometimes as many as dozens of pages in a textbook. According to Shelby, she "couldn't survive college without Kurzweil 3000." Shelby even keeps up with her peers on Facebook and email by using Kurzweil 3000. "In the cloud, nobody knows what your disabilities are," says Tom.
Committed to serving the needs of individuals with learning disabilities — regardless of whether or not the disability is physical or cognitive — Cambium Learning Technologies is pleased to be a part of such an incredible story. Shelby looks forward to a life that is "happy, fulfilled and complete." Her father says, "My dreams for her future are already coming true."
