TechNet California Supports Calls for Silicon Valley U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
West Coast Patent Office Will Streamline Patent Process
WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TechNet, the bipartisan policy and political network of CEOs that promotes the growth of the innovation economy, today voiced support for the creation of a Silicon Valley regional branch of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
A broad coalition of business executives, university leaders and state legislators led by Assembly member Nora Campos (D-San Jose) have led the push for designation of Silicon Valley as one of the three regional USPTO offices established by the America Invents Act. In a letter to Under Secretary for Intellectual Property David Kappos, the group outlined benefits that a northern California USPTO office would hold for both innovators and the USPTO itself.
The America Invests Act authorizes three or more satellite United States Patent and Trademark Offices to be established by the year 2014. A satellite office in northern California is ideally situated to service the surrounding innovation centers, including southern and central California, the Bay Area, Salt Lake City and Seattle.
"The U.S. patent system should focus on making it easy for innovators of all sizes to protect inventions and build their companies," said Eve Bukowski, Executive Director of California of TechNet. "Establishing a U.S. patent office branch in Silicon Valley, which generates 12 percent of all U.S. patents, will deliver resources where they're needed and support a key source of our nation's innovation."
