TechNet Applauds Improved PUC Rules Regarding Smart Grid Data Access and Privacy
PALO ALTO, Calif., July 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TechNet, the bipartisan policy and political network of technology CEOs that promotes the growth of technology and the innovation economy, today issued the following statement regarding the California Public Utility Commission's approval of new consumer privacy protection rules applicable to the smart grid systems being implemented by California's investor-owned utilities.
"Modernizing our electrical grid through the adoption of Smart Grid systems is critical to strengthening our economy, creating jobs and bolstering our energy security," said Jim Hawley, General Counsel and Senior VP, State Policy, TechNet. "The final privacy rules adopted by the California PUC will empower consumers with access to their detailed energy usage, price and cost data so that they can better control their electric use and reduce their monthly bills.
"It is critical that consumers obtain access to products and services that will enable them to benefit from their smart meters, and these rules will keep the door open for innovation in the home area network ("HAN") sector so that they can do so. The issues presented by this rulemaking were complex, and TechNet appreciates the efforts of the Commission to improve these rules by protecting consumer privacy interests in a way that permits continuing innovation in the smart grid space."
