TechAmerica Statement on EU Court of Justice Ruling in "Right to be Forgotten" Case

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TechAmerica, the public policy and public sector division of CompTIA, Tuesday issued this statement from Mike Hettinger, Senior Vice President for Federal Government Affairs and Public Sector, concerning the European Union's Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on the case addressing the "right to be forgotten."

"The ruling gives individuals the right to demand that a search engine – or any online service – delete certain links pointing to sites that refer to them. This applies even if the information is accurate, lawful and in the public domain.

"The ruling today by the ECJ would have a direct, adverse effect on free expression, access to information and incredibly burden the overall operation of the internet by online platforms. Of particular concern, is a requirement that those ISPs remove lawfully-published information. This goes beyond what is reasonable."
