TechAmerica Comments on President Obama's Cybersecurity Legislative Proposal
WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TechAmerica, the public sector and public advocacy department of CompTIA, today issued the following statement on President Obama's cybersecurity legislative proposal announced at the Department of Homeland Security's National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center. The following statement is attributed to Elizabeth Hyman, Executive Vice President of Public Advocacy.
"TechAmerica applauds the President for proposing a legislative package that will improve our national security, stimulate technological ingenuity, and protect the privacy of the American people. TechAmerica suggests that Congress should use this plan as a guideline, and improve upon it to craft significant legislation that further cultivates the public-private cyber threat partnership.
"TechAmerica supports the proposals outlined by the President, specifically, a more robust approach to punishing criminals by giving law enforcement the tools to deter and defend against identity theft and the sale of stolen U.S. financial information. Additionally, the president's proposal to grant "targeted liability protections" will foster greater industry participation, while helping to progress what has traditionally initiated the barriers to sound and meaningful threat-sharing policy. Our position remains that organizations acting in good faith should be incentivized to partner with the federal government – who has the ultimate responsibility of safeguarding personal data when disseminating threat codes.
"The threats to our nation's critical infrastructure are continually growing, and our capacity as a nation to protect US critical infrastructure from cyber attacks must remain at the forefront of governing. Recent high-profile attacks promulgated by nation-states and terror organizations only increase the urgency to improve our national threat awareness and cybersecurity readiness.
"We look forward to continuing our efforts to work with Congress and the Administration to ensure that the outcome of these proposals generates the most secure cyber landscape possible," said Hyman.
