WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Teamsters Union remembers the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks today, and the Teamster members who were critical to rescue, recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The Teamster response to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, was enormous and encompassed dozens of Teamster local unions across multiple states. Teamsters quickly descended on lower Manhattan to take part in recovery, rescue and cleanup efforts at Ground Zero.
Teamster police officers, truck drivers, sanitation workers, forklift operators and others all worked together to help confused and frightened victims and family members, to remove fallen debris from the World Trade Center towers and coordinate blood drives, among other assistance.
Teamster local unions and Joint Councils in the New York and Washington, D.C., areas played a major role in the efforts, and the International Union made sure members were protected from the economic fallout and health risks of the terrorist attacks.
Thousands of Teamsters from across North America donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund to help those who were impacted by the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, and their families.
In the aftermath of the attack, more than 1,200 Teamsters worked together to help construct One World Trade Center, a tribute to those who lost their lives that day.
"Today, we remember the victims of this tragedy, and as a union, take solace that our members could be of service in a time of great national need," said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. "Our members feel honored to have been part of building the tribute to the victims."
