Filler's appointment gives the Teamsters an important voice on the council, which is tasked with advising the president on matters involving labor-management relations within the executive branch. Eight other people were also named to the council.
"I am grateful that these distinguished men and women have offered their wise counsel to help foster successful labor-management relations within the executive branch," Obama said in a statement issued by the White House.
Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa appointed Filler to lead the Public Services Division on Feb. 3.
"A properly engaged federal employee workforce will enable progress to occur in many departments that will benefit the public," Filler said. "Organized labor and the Teamsters can be the catalyst to make it happen."
"Michael Filler has demonstrated a strong commitment to organizing at the local, state and national levels, as well as working on issues of importance to our members and all working Americans," Hoffa said. "There is no better person to represent federal government employees."
The Teamsters represent more than 225,000 workers in the United States and Canada who provide vital public services. Founded in 1903, the Teamsters Union represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
