WASHINGTON, June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hundreds of D.C. cab drivers affiliated with the Teamsters Union will take part in a "Fairness NOW!" caravan throughout the city on Wednesday, June 25 to demand an immediate stop to illegal private sedan services until a fair resolution is reached.
The services, such as UberX, are operating illegally in the city and are stealing work from D.C. taxi drivers. Drivers are also concerned about the impact on public safety because the private sedan service drivers are not required to undergo thorough background checks.
The drivers will depart from East Potomac Park at about 10 a.m. and will caravan to Freedom Plaza, arriving at about 10:45 a.m. to deliver a letter and petition to city officials.
The D.C. City Council has failed to enact fair regulations for the private sedan services. Taxi drivers are demanding a level playing field. A Council bill, 20-753, would continue to give the illegal services an unfair economic advantage.
To gain a stronger voice, more than 2,000 taxi drivers have formed the Washington, D.C., Taxi Operators Association, affiliated with Teamsters Local 922 in Washington.
