Education Week recently reported that American teachers spent, on average, nearly $500 of their own money last academic year to provide items not adequately covered by their school districts.
In 2002, the Public Education Foundation of Las Vegas established the Teacher EXCHANGE, a green initiative to bring much-needed resources to Clark County School District (CCSD) classrooms while also helping the environment. A reuse/recycle center, the Teacher EXCHANGE collects books, office supplies, manufacturing and convention overruns and other surplus materials originally headed for landfills and distributes them to CCSD teachers for use in the classroom. The Teacher EXCHANGE has repurposed approximately two million pounds of material and distributed about $10 million of classroom resources.
"As budget cutbacks continue, teachers are increasingly expected to spin straw into gold," said Judi Steele, President and CEO of The Public Education Foundation. "The Teacher EXCHANGE provides a tangible reminder that they are valued members of the community."
