CHERRY HILL, N.J. and PORTLAND, Maine, Sept. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, will support Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with involvement in walks, fundraising initiatives and awareness programs to educate both customers and bank employees about a disease that affects hundreds of thousands of women every year.

TD's involvement began as a grassroots effort by employees. TD Bank's Women in Leadership committee heard about the effort and decided to create a bank-wide, coordinated effort to raise awareness of the disease with its customers and employees. TD Bank employees will be wearing pink wrist bands throughout the month of October to foster awareness and show support of the cause.
"Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an amazing opportunity to engage and empower women," said Linda Verba, Executive Vice President, Store Operations and Service Programs, and Chair of the Women in Leadership Committee. "Our hope is to foster conversations and create awareness about a disease that has touched the lives of so many of our employees and customers. TD Bank employees have been so passionate about helping this cause and we are proud to support them in the quest for a cure."
Nearly 5,000 (and counting) TD Bank employees will take part in Breast Cancer Awareness walks throughout the bank's Maine to Florida footprint in October. At its October 2 Jackson, New Jersey walk, the South/Central New Jersey chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will recognize TD Bank as the Biggest New Team (for number of walkers) and Third Largest Corporate Team.
TD is also committed to educating its employees about breast cancer prevention. TD Bank has launched an internal campaign called "Passionately Pink" for its more than 25,000 employees, which will share stories of employees affected by the disease, as well as offer tips for prevention and health benefits employees can take advantage of to stay healthy. Breast cancer awareness posters will be displayed in employee areas of TD Bank's stores and back offices.
Some of the tips TD is offering to employees include:
- Early detection is critical – make it a priority.
- Watch your weight – It's important to stay at the right body weight for your height and age. Overweight women have higher estrogen levels, which increases their cancer risk.
- Exercise regularly – Working out helps lower body fat. Less fat means less risk. One hour a day can help lower breast cancer risk by 20 percent. But even 30 minutes a day can improve your chances.
- Don't smoke – Smoking cigarettes raises your risk. If you are a smoker, think about getting help to stop.
TD Bank's Women in Leadership Committee is dedicated to developing emerging female talent as the leaders of the future through mentoring, seminars, networking opportunities and more.
