BRONX, N.Y., March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Staff, students and supporters of Mott Haven Academy Charter School and The New York Foundling were treated to a live drumming performance by Haven Academy scholars, and school administrators were presented with a surprise three-year, $500,000 commitment from TD Bank today at the school's South Bronx campus.

In partnership with The New York Foundling, one of New York City's oldest and largest family service agencies, Haven Academy's vision is to address the barriers to educational achievement that plague children growing up in poor, underserved urban communities and particularly those in the child welfare system. Haven Academy, located in our nation's most impoverished Congressional district, is the first K-8 charter school in the nation to integrate a rigorous academic curriculum with supportive social services (provided by The New York Foundling), a program designed to give this vulnerable population the best chance at academic success.
The $500,000 donation will support The New York Foundling Futures After-School Program at Haven Academy, a key component of the school's model. The Program provides 100% of the school population with enrichment activities tied to school-day learning, academic skill-building, and the emotional support that these young scholars need in order to keep pace with students not facing the same level of instability at home. The program also keeps these children safe and constructively engaged during after-school hours.
"The dedicated teachers and staff at Haven Academy provide tremendous learning opportunities for children who have unique academic and social needs," said Chris Giamo, Regional President for TD Bank. "We are proud to support The New York Foundling and Haven Academy as they continue to help at-risk children find paths to future success."
"We believe that all children, regardless of their financial and familial circumstances, deserve a chance to succeed and to experience all that life has to offer," said Bill Baccaglini, Executive Director of The New York Foundling. "Without the Futures Program, the vast majority of our students would not receive the types of enrichment activities and academic support available to more affluent children. We are profoundly grateful to TD Bank for its commitment to making this program a reality for our students and their families."
The TD donation to support The New York Foundling's Futures After-School Program at Haven Academy will be paid over a three year period beginning in June 2012.
