TD Bank Celebrates 10 Years of its Summer Reading Program, Encourages Kids to Keep Their Reading Skills Sharp During the Summer

CHERRY HILL, N.J. and PORTLAND, Maine, May 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Marking its tenth year encouraging children to maintain and improve their reading skills during the summer, TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, again will hold its annual Summer Reading Program.

The program rewards children who read 10 books during the summer with a $10 deposit into a new or existing Young Saver account. In 2011, 44,186 children participated in the program and read 441,860 books, earning $441,860 for their Young Saver accounts.

To help celebrate the Summer Reading Program's tenth anniversary, TD Bank is expanding its Employee Reading Program to a year-round format. Employees volunteer to read at local schools, libraries and youth organizations several times throughout the year to encourage year-round reading. The books – chosen for their message about the importance of saving money – are donated to the school or organization for children to enjoy for years to come.

"Through our Summer Reading Program and the expansion of the Employee Reading Program, TD Bank encourages children to not only read during the summer, but to enjoy reading year-round to maintain and improve their reading skills."

Tips for parents to help encourage children to read during the summer include:

• Set a reading time; designate an hour each day for reading. If it is nice outside, encourage reading outside in the shade underneath a tree.
• Show interest in what your child is reading. Ask questions about his or her reaction to the book.
• Get creative with comprehension. When your child finishes a book, ask if he or she would change anything about a character or the book's ending.
• Start a weekly reading club with other parents and their children. Encourage each parent and child to select a book for the group to read each week.

Recommended books for kids' summer reading lists include: What Can I Buy?, by Julie Moriarty;  A Quarter from the Tooth Fairy, by Caren Holtzman; Pigs Will Be Pigs, by Amy Axelrod; Max's Money, by Teddy Slater; How Much is that Guinea Pig in the Window?, by Joanne Rocklin; and The Case of the Shrunken Allowance, by Joanne Rocklin.
