Taxpayers Protection Alliance tells the U.S. Postal Service "stick to delivering our letters" in new video
President David Williams argues that the USPS must stop costly business ventures and private-market abuse, return to core mission
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) today released a damning video calling on the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to immediately halt expanded offerings it cannot afford and return to its government-chartered mission to dependably deliver First Class mail.
Despite decades of precedent in which the USPS faithfully met its obligation, TPA views the agency today a shell of itself – misguided by inept leadership, wasteful and reckless spending, and highly problematic business ventures such as grocery delivery and seven day parcel services. As the video documents, basic mail is suffering alongside market expansion, increasing at least from 2.14 to 2.25 days on average and making it harder for Americans to send and receive mail on time.
"Our message is clear and consistent: the USPS must stop expanding services into new markets and make good on its obligations to deliver first class mail to anyone, anywhere, at an affordable rate," said TPA President David Williams. "Expanding services into the private market is not only wrong because it undercuts private competitors, but because it is coming at the expense of its government-granted monopoly – mail delivery."
According to the most recent financial disclosures from the USPS the situation is grim. The USPS has lost $5.5 billion this year alone, $30.5 billion since 2011 and continues to put its 600,000 employees at risk, defaulting once again on its $5.7 billion retiree health benefits payment.
"The USPS is ill equipped to provide such a diverse set of offerings both financially and structurally," Williams added. "The agency has lost its way, refusing to prove new delivery services will not disrupt the private market and making promises they will be hard pressed to meet. It is time for real reform that will put the Postal Service on a path to financial stability, end private market abuse, and restore its mandate of delivering the mail on time to Americans.
