ABOUT MASATO TAGAWA
Tagawa-san grew up with much admiration for his father, a gifted scientist who developed the first emulsifier, ethoxylated sorbitan esters, after World War II. He began to study both skincare and chemistry, receiving a master's degree from the Science University of Tokyo. After graduating, Tagawa-san worked in Research and Development for 25 years, rising through the ranks to be a Supervisor for special projects in 2000. From there, he became a consultant with Gram Enterprises Co. Ltd., where he met Victoria Tsai in 2010.
"Tatcha is a young company, but it has an old soul, and it's a very exciting place to work," Tagawa-san says. "When I met Vicky, I really felt her passion and curiosity—she left a strong impression on me."
Tagawa-san is an expert in developing natural actives as well as a globally recognized leader in colloid chemistry with a focus on emulsification. He is also renowned in the field of formulation development based on the combination of theoretical chemistry and practical formulations, as well as improving formulations for stability, effectiveness and safety.
A talented educator, Tagawa-san has consulted with major global cosmetics companies and has published articles in the Fragrance Journal and The Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan.
"Creating a formula requires perfect harmony," Tagawa-san says. "Many people think that one ingredient is the most important, so you must have more of that ingredient. But it's just as important to consider how the ingredients react with one another. It is like an orchestra—you have many players with amazing skill, but if one player rises above the others, they are not harmonized. If you make a formula harmonious, you have created beautiful music, a beautiful product."
