HP ALM 'the one ring to bind them:' An experience report on adopting ALM in a heterogeneous environment at BlackRock Investments

Modern software development is a messy affair with complex problems, disconnected disciplines and immature practices. For large financial services organizations, software is a key enabler to delivering value to its customers, empowering employees and providing insights to management. The combination of increased complexity and value has led BlackRock to invest in the process of software delivery, and the application of the discipline ALM to the problem of disconnected delivery. Their desire, like many organizations, is to provide better insights, improve collaboration and make the process of software delivery flow faster. In this talk Major and West will discuss the journey BlackRock has taken in adopting a successful ALM practice. They will outline steps toward connecting the disciplines of quality and development, and how that has created increased traceability, visibility and reporting in a heterogeneous tool stack. They also will discuss the challenges of adopting an integrated approach to software, both technical and cultural, and the steps necessary to take the ideas of ALM and implement them. The journey is by no means complete, but in this talk Major and West will provide attendees with a description of their experience and a set of ideas for how an IT organization can adopt the ALM practice.
