Jerome is the ninth student to receive the ETS Scholarship, which includes tuition and fees toward a baccalaureate degree, housing, meals, books, transportation, a computer and a monthly stipend. Previous scholarship winners are currently enrolled in Bryn Mawr College, Muhlenberg College and Spelman College. Other winners of the ETS Scholarship have graduated from Bryn Mawr College, The College of New Jersey, Georgian Court University, Hampton University and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
Born and raised in Haiti, Jerome moved to Ewing, N.J., when she was 12 years old. She attended schools in Ewing until two years ago when the family moved to Trenton and she began her junior year at Trenton Central High School's West Campus.
Jerome sat for the ETS Scholarship essay exam at the end of April along with other Trenton High School graduating seniors. She wrote about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as the person in history she would have most liked to meet to discuss ways to improve her community. She called King, "a man of action who would have used his skills of persuasion to end gun violence in Trenton."
"People in this community want change, they want gun violence to cease and they want the senseless killing of innocent people to stop; yet they do not do anything about it, " Jerome wrote in her winning essay. "We talk about change, but we do not act toward it."
The ETS Scholarship is available to one student graduating from Trenton Central High School. This year about 50 students sat for the proctored essay exam. Essays are read by a Trenton Central High School vice principal, a Mercer County Community College faculty member, and an ETS assessment specialist. The quality of the essay as well as the student's grade point average and class rank are considered in the selection of the winner.
As a senior at Trenton Central High School, Jerome participated in the Urban Academic Academy at Mercer County Community College, an after-school and Saturday program offering college preparation, guidance and support in language arts, mathematics and science. She is happy to be attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick because of its diversity of cultures. Her goal is to major in molecular biology, attend medical school and practice anesthesiology.
"I am so blessed by this scholarship. Thank you ETS."
