Winners were named in two categories: a category for high school seniors and the other for high school graduates. In the first category, grand prize winner Christina Snyder earned a $10,000 scholarship per year for up to four years to attend The Art Institute of Tennessee - Nashville. In the high school graduate category, Tiffany Dyer earned a $10,000 tuition scholarship to study photography at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Entrants were asked to submit original photographs that tell a story on a single theme, an artist statement describing the entry and a high school transcript demonstrating a GPA of 2.0 or higher or proof of high school graduation. Local-level finalists were then selected at each of the participating Art Institutes schools offering photography programs to progress to the national level of the competition.
Overall, the various entries reflected a wide range of approaches and techniques, spanning from traditional black and white, to color photography, and beyond. In the high school senior category, Christina's photos represented an expression of love for music; her images were vivid with the unique quality of appearing to look like oil on canvas. From the time she was a little girl playing with disposable cameras, until now at the age of 18, Christina always knew she wanted to be a photographer. Christina hopes to pursue a career in fashion photography.
Tiffany Dyer's photos tell a fluid and cohesive story of her life as an identical twin, the single-most defining factor in her life. Through her pictures, she is able to reveal her life experiences in poignant snapshots. Always interested in art, Tiffany began playing with "point and shoot" cameras as a child, and she borrowed a friend's automatic camera for her prize-winning photo story.
The first prize winner in the high school senior category – earning a $5,000 per year scholarship (for up to four years) was Carmen Brown representing The Art Institute of Houston – North. The second prize winner – earning a $2,500 per year scholarship (for up to four years) was Jamie Winter representing The Art Institute of Portland.
"The images from our winners possess the unique quality of telling a powerful story without the use of any explanations. The photos truly speak for themselves. Through our scholarship competitions, we seek out the best talent from across the country and every time we are impressed by the creativity in the entries that we receive. Christina and Tiffany are both extremely talented and we are honored to help them hone their skills and transform their passion into successful careers," said John Mazzoni, President of The Art Institutes.
