NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Talcum powder lawsuits continue to move forward in Missouri, where hundreds of cases have been filed on behalf of women who allegedly developed ovarian cancer related to the use of Johnson & Johnson's talc-based powders for feminine hygiene purposes. According to a decision issued last week in Missouri's 22nd Judicial Circuit Court for St. Louis, Johnson & Johnson has been denied a request to stay upcoming trials pending its appeals of three earlier verdicts. Court documents indicate that the proceeding's fourth talcum powder trial will begin next month, with jury selection scheduled to commence on January 30th. (Case No 1422-CC09012-01)
"Our Firm has heard from numerous women concerned that their long-term use of Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products led to the development of ovarian cancer. We are pleased that the Missouri trials will move forward as scheduled, and will monitor the progress of these cases closely," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices, drugs and consumer products. The Firm is offering free legal reviews to victims of ovarian cancer allegedly related to the use of Johnson & Johnson's talc-based powders.
Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer
Court documents indicate that more than 2,500 talcum powder lawsuits have been filed on behalf of ovarian cancer victims in jurisdictions throughout the U.S. Plaintiffs point to a number of studies dating back to the 1970s which suggest that the regular and repeated application of talc-based powders to the female genitals can contribute t the development of ovarian cancer. They also cite internal company documents indicating that Johnson & Johnson was aware of this evidence, but continued to market its talcum powders to adult women without any safety warnings in order to protect sales of the products.
Three talcum powder lawsuits have already gone to trial in Missouri this year. All concluded with verdicts favoring plaintiffs, including compensatory and punitive damage awards of $55 million, $72 million and $70 million.
In additional to the cases pending in Missouri, more than 80 talcum powder lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson have been centralized in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey. An additional 224 cases are pending in a multicounty litigation established in New Jersey's Atlantic County Superior Court. (In Re: Talc-Based Powder Products – Case No. 300)
