Take Simple Steps to Avoid the Danger of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Ted Puzio of Southern Trust Home Services reminds southern Virginia homeowners that January is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month
ROANOKE, Va., Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Trust Home Services, a leading Roanoke-based HVAC, plumbing and electrical company serving southern Virginia, is reminding homeowners that it is peak time for Carbon Monoxide poisoning and is urging everyone to take simple steps to avoid unnecessary danger.
"January is known as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month because it's a time when more homeowners are trying to keep warm and the number of accidental poisonings increases," said Ted Puzio, owner of Southern Trust Home Services. "Carbon monoxide poisoning can start with simple headaches and flu-like symptoms, but it can quickly worsen and is even more dangerous for children and elderly individuals."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 430 people die in the United States each year from carbon monoxide poisoning.
To protect loved ones, Puzio said homeowners should conduct an annual home safety inventory, which includes annual maintenance of furnaces and fireplaces and other equipment that relies on gas to make sure they're in properly functioning order.
"It's also important to have carbon monoxide detectors near every sleeping area in your home and to test the batteries every six months," Puzio said. "These detectors are so important because you can't see, taste or smell the gas."
Puzio said homeowners can easily lower or eliminate many common risk factors and offered other tips, including keeping flue pipes and vents clear and never using gas ovens or stoves as a heat source.
"Make sure gas appliances, like space heaters, are used appropriately in well-ventilated spots," Puzio said. "Also, make sure when you're painting or using varnish that you do so in a place with good air flow."
