WINTER SPORTS AND ICE SKATING
The NHL will host the 2015 Winter Classic, an old-time outdoor hockey game for international broadcast in National's Park on Jan. 1, 2015. The host team, the Washington Capitals will take on the Chicago Blackhawks at 1:30 p.m. in a special rink built inside the baseball stadium. While tickets to the feel-good game are sold out, there are myriad places to watch around town. Additionally, the family-friendly spirit of the Winter Classic will be celebrated on Half Street near the baseball stadium between 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on game day with a fan festival. Fans are invited to test their hockey skills and show their spirit before the puck drops on New Year's Day. For those looking for a larger hockey story: National Museum of American History has American hockey memorabilia in their collection.
There are many more opportunities to enjoy world-class hockey as the Washington Capitals take on their division at the Verizon Center in the heart of the Penn Quarter. Teams within drive-in radius include the Philadelphia Flyers; Carolina Hurricanes; Columbus Blue Jackets; New Jersey Devils; and Detroit Red Wings. DC fans "rock the red" and the ethos in the stands is family-friendly fun. The Washington Capitals' practice ice at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, VA is accessible from downtown DC by metro. The space offers fans opportunities to watch the team practice and to skate during public hours too.
For those who want to show off their triple axels, there are several places to ice skate al fresco:
- Magnificent works of art ring the rink at the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden.
- Or, head to Georgetown's Washington Harbour for a spin around their riverside rink boasting views of the Potomac and Theodore Roosevelt Island.
- Near National's Park, home of the 2015 NHL Winter Classic, the 12,000-square foot rink in Canal Park in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood offers public skating sessions and learn-to-skate lessons.
All rinks are operational and weather dependent, between late-November until late February.
HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Our city is aglow:

SHOPPING
A boomlet in high-end retail at CityCenterDC (Burberry, Kate Spade, Longchamp, Hugo BOSS) in the Penn Quarter as well as busy boutiques across shopping districts like Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Friendship Heights and Barracks Row on Capitol Hill make DC a great place to shop for holiday treats.
Destination DC's 2014 holiday campaign offers a view of a family shopping in Georgetown: parents and children, who might well be planning to visit unique boutiques like M29 Lifestyle (chic accessories, baby clothes and party dresses for mothers and daughters); Tugooh Toys (treats for ages tot-12, and DC-centric toys like a Lego White House); Addison/Ripley Fine Art (contemporary paintings, prints, photos); A Mano (European-accented homewares); and Hugh & Crye (bespoke shirts for men).
As good as our neighborhoods are, the variety of DC's museum shops truly adds only-in-DC elements to one's holiday shopping lists. Among the museum shops loaded with toys, treasures and trinkets: The National Gallery of Art; National Building Museum; National Museum of the American Indian; Library of Congress; International Spy Museum; National Museum of African Art; Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens and many others.
There are two stand-out opportunities to shop DC's museums in one place: Strathmore's annual Museum Shop Around unites 19 not-for-profit museums selling their wares at a holiday bazaar (Nov. 13-16). Smithsonian museums on the National Mall throw a serious shopping party in time for the holidays. During the Smithsonian Holiday Festival (Dec. 6-7) there are over 40 special events including book signings, photo ops, concerts, trunk shows and a shuttle bus will circulate between the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of American History, with stops along the National Mall. In the spirit of a European Christmas market, the Downtown Holiday Market hosts rows of boutiques in tents where guests can shop for trinkets, gifts, ornaments and other surprises at this pop-up market. Shoppers can warm up with hot chocolate and a pocket of Migue's Magnificent Mini-Donuts.
FINE ART
At the National Museum of Women in the Arts, "Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea" (Dec. 5-Apr. 25, 2015) presents a survey of images of the Virgin Mary as person and concept in Western art from the 6th-18th century by the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo and women artists including Artemisia Gentileschi, on loan from the Vatican Museum and the Uffizi Gallery, among others.
