TAB Affiliated Mesa Products Inc., Honored with 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
Performance excellence of Tulsa Oklahoma based Engineering Firm Recognized by NIST.
WESTMINSTER, Colo., Nov. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alternative Board (TAB), the international leader of business coaching and peer boards, is pleased to announce that Mesa Products Inc., member business of a TAB Tulsa peer advisory board, has received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, based at and managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, awarded Mesa Products Inc. the nation's highest presidential honor for performance excellence at a ceremony in Washington D.C. The award was presented by acting US Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank.
CEO and Owner Terry May started Mesa Products Inc, a producer of cathodic protection and corrosion control solutions, 34 years ago, and his company has been growing ever since. Mesa Products Inc. currently employs 139 workers; their revenue is expected to be $55 million in 2012. Speaking on the importance of the Baldrige Institute, Mr. May says, "The value of what they do is the Baldrige Criteria, which is a management model that asks hard questions about how interested you are in self improvement, and really helps you to balance the way you operate a business."
Mesa Products is a two time winner of the Baldrige National Quality Award; the company also received top honors in the small business category at the 2006 ceremony. When prodded, Mr. May modestly shrugged off this achievement, saying, "When you're running a business, there's always a couple of approaches that work. The Baldrige approach has worked best for our business." Though Mr. May hinted that a three-peat could be in the cards for Mesa Products Inc, he was clear that his company would not be receiving the award next year. "You have to wait 5 years before you can reapply for an award," said May "this time around, our company waited 6."
Mr. May has been a member of The Alternative Board Tulsa for the better part of 20 years. Since joining The Alternative Board, he estimates his annual revenue has grown from five million dollars, to over fifty million dollars. Speaking on the importance of TAB, Mr. May says "The advice, criticism, and direction that I've gotten in my TAB group has really saved me a lot of heartache." He continued, "At first I wasn't convinced of the value of TAB, but I made an operations decision based on one of my first board meetings that more than paid for my membership in The Alternative Board. TAB Tulsa has been helping me make good decisions ever since. "
