Syska Hennessy Group Forms Strategic Partnership With KaTO
CHICAGO, March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Syska Hennessy Group, Inc., a global consulting, engineering and commissioning firm, is announcing it has formed a strategic partnership with KaTO, a non-profit design/build studio which engages new students of architecture, engineering, and building construction to design and construct schools in developing countries.
With this partnership, students from KaTO will work together with professional team members from Syska Hennessy to discuss and learn about the design and construction of a primary school for underprivileged children.
The program is a hybrid between an academic design/build studio, professional practice, and a study abroad program. KaTO was founded as a response to the tremendous opportunity for future architects and engineers to address the international need for education. The program, which was founded by architect Kyle Murphy in 2014, allows architectural and engineering students to receive hands-on accredited industry education while simultaneously helping build education facilities in impoverished regions around the world.
The educational program is divided into multiple sections for its students over the course of the program, which includes an introduction to the company, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems and a detailed studio discussion.
During the research and design period, team members from Syska Hennessy and students from KaTO will engage in an ongoing dialogue regarding the development of the project design and the integration of building systems. Students will consider building energy use, ventilation, water treatment, and other important topics to advance the project.
Team members from Syska Hennessy will also make periodic presentations to the students on company projects, roles of MEP engineers during a project, and an introduction to the fields of mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering. Syska Hennessy Group is serving as both a sponsor and active partner with KaTO.

Kyle Thomas Murphy, Executive Director:
"I previously worked with Syska Hennessy Group during my career and was very familiar with their long history of engineering success and top-notch professionals. This was the ideal partnership for KaTO and we're delighted to be working together," said Mr. Murphy. "Our program is a win-win for all involved. Current professionals discover new cultures, our students are mentored by the best in the business and most importantly, disadvantaged children internationally are given access to better educational facilities."
Joseph O'Sullivan Vice President, Managing Director, Chicago Office:
"Social responsibility has always been important to Syska Hennessy Group. Partnering with KaTO is a great opportunity for us to not only give back to our industry but to ultimately make a meaningful impact towards helping build educational facilities in regions worldwide that desperately need it," said Joseph O'Sullivan, vice president, Syska Hennessy Group. "For us as a company, this program is all about investing our time in something important and lending our skills in ways that make a difference."
