Syngenta Agricultural Scholarship encourages students to contribute to sustainability dialogue

- $20,000 in total awards available
- Application deadline May 15, 2015
GREENSBORO, N.C., March 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Syngenta invites eligible university students to contribute to the ongoing ag sustainability dialogue by applying to its second annual Syngenta Agricultural Scholarship program, which opens for applications today. Applicants are encouraged to develop an implementation plan for one of the six commitments comprising The Good Growth Plan.
Launched in 2013, The Good Growth Plan represents a measurable, global effort by Syngenta to improve crop productivity while also preserving natural resources. The six commitments of The Good Growth Plan are:
- Make crops more efficient
- Rescue more farmland
- Help biodiversity flourish
- Empower smallholders
- Help people stay safe
- Look after every worker
"The future of agriculture is dependent on realizing these important, ambitious commitments—and we look to the future leaders in agriculture to help progress sustainable agriculture and address the global food security challenge," said Jill Wheeler, head of sustainable productivity in North America, Syngenta. "Meeting these targets by 2020 will certainly make a deep, lasting and positive impact on agriculture, so we are excited to hear the plans that these leaders have for the future."
Undergraduate and graduate university students pursuing degrees in crop-related disciplines are eligible to compete for $20,000 in scholarship awards. Applicants must be enrolled as of spring 2015 in an accredited agriculture program at a U.S. land grant university.
"We highly encourage eligible students to apply for the scholarship and to draw upon their education, background, unique skills and goals to develop an implementation plan," said Mary Streett DeMers, senior communications lead, Syngenta. "It's a great way for students to establish their names in the industry and expand their networks. We look forward to what the future holds for these outstanding students and their careers in agriculture."
There are many ways in which scholarship winners can apply the award to advance their careers, as 2014 graduate level grand prize winner Kelsey Hensley has demonstrated. "I intend to use this scholarship for continuing my education, going to conferences and maintaining my membership to professional organizations such as the American Society of Biosystems Engineers and the American Water Association," Hensley said after receiving her prize last fall.
This year's scholarships will be awarded to winners in fall 2015.
