SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Swell Investing today announced the launch of the Swell Impact 400, a new portfolio of 400 public equities diversified across sectors and all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With Swell's $50 minimum, the new portfolio provides one of the most accessible ways for investors to get started with impact investing.
In building the portfolio, Swell's impact team examined thousands of companies, ultimately identifying 400 companies poised to drive returns while achieving social and environmental impact by:
- Deriving revenue from one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals
- Ensuring that each company has at least one woman or minority on its board or executive team
- Providing broad diversification across sectors
Each company's positive impact and contribution to the UN SDGs is available to view on Swell's portfolios page. Since inception (9/30/2016) through June 30, 2018, Swell's combined six portfolios have performed in line with the broad market. Swell's combined portfolios' total return net of fees for this period was 30%.
"Over the next decade, we're going to see more investors move their portfolio into impact as more products become available to meet their needs," said Dave Fanger, CEO and Founder of Swell Investing. "This new portfolio provides an opportunity to invest in all 17 global goals, build a positive financial future and support peace and prosperity for the next generation."
Alignment to UN SDGs
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals represent the "world's to do list." In 2015, 193 world leaders adopted the 17 global goals, which aim to protect the planet, ensure prosperity and end poverty by 2030. Each of the companies in Swell's Impact 400 portfolio derives revenue from products and solutions addressing the UN SDGs, ensuring that each company is actively working towards creating positive change in the world.
"Impact investing demands a strong framework to ensure that investors' dollars are achieving as much positive social and environmental change as possible," said Jake Raden, co-lead of Swell Investing's impact team. "The UN Sustainable Development Goals represent the greatest challenges to society, making them a perfect supporting structure for evaluating impact."
Investing in Diverse Teams
Companies with diverse ethnic and gender representation on their boards and executive teams tend to outperform their competitors. Investors in the Impact 400 are positioned to take advantage of that performance as each equity includes at least one woman or ethnically diverse member of their board or executive team.
Starting today, investors can sign up for Swell and invest in the Impact 400 here. All holdings within the Impact 400 can be found here, along with information on their alignment to the UN SDGs.
