Sweden's Submarine Future: Commander Lindén

In the view of the Scandinavians, as well as that of many other countries, Russia has not, as hoped, turned away from its past. Therefore, nations are being driven to adapt their security policies and prepare for what the future has to bring. 

Contrary to other 'neutrals' who are much closer to the hotspot of Ukraine, Sweden wants strong invest in its forces and - like Finland - is deepening its ties with NATO, even being quite open about calm discussion over the prospect of joining the Alliance. Amidst this transitional period in northern security orientation, GEORG MADER visited the Swedish Navy for Defence IQ. Specifically, he set out to explore the sensitive issue of cutting edge submarines at Karlskrona.

Originally, the visit had not been intended to address the subject of hostilities in Ukraine or the fears of possible wars in Europe. It was organised to discuss and learn the significance of modern diesel-electric submarines compared with AIP (Air Independent Propulsion).

However, the permanently changing regional security situation and the intensified activities of the Russian Baltic-Fleet (at Kaliningrad and Kronstadt), seen even before the conflict flared in Ukraine, may be seen as an aggressive attitude towards Sweden. So it was perhaps inevitable that the discussion with Kommendörkapten (Commander) Fredrik S. Lindén, Ops Chief of Sweden's 1st Submarine Flotilla, quickly broadened to cover these recent events…
