Sutherland Apartment Renovations Now Complete in Chicago
Historic building in South Side Chicago once host to famous jazz musicians at Sutherland Lounge has re-opened as Chicago luxury apartments.
CHICAGO, June 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The management of Sutherland luxury apartments in Chicago has announced the grand re-opening of the building, located at 4659 Drexel Boulevard. After a renovation to the building that once doubled as a well-known hotel and jazz lounge, the converted structure is now available to tenants.
The terra cotta and brick building is seven stories high and features studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments in Chicago. The street-level space that once housed the Sutherland Lounge now features commercial tenants as well as a 24-hour concierge in the lobby for the apartment building's residents. Building renovations for the Chicago apartments include a Wi-fi lounge, 24-hour fitness center, laundry facility and a newly created bicycle parking area.
"This building is a part of Chicago's rich history," said Greg Guttman, marketing director for Sutherland Apartments. "We're excited about restoring it to its former grandeur while safeguarding its future."
Sutherland Hotel was built in 1917 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was used as a military hospital in 1918 and later returned to its original purpose as a hotel in 1925. In the 1940s, '50s and '60s, the Sutherland Lounge hosted famous jazz and blues musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. The lounge later became a meeting place for civil rights activists and for political organizations. At one time, the ground floor housed a variety of retail stores. The hotel closed in 1982, reopening in 1989 as an apartment building. It has undergone a handful of changes and renovations over the years, including a complete transformation into what are now Chicago luxury apartments owned by MAC Property Management, LLC.
