Survivors to Tell Their Personal Stories from China's Forced Labor Camps

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Hanging Up High," "Tiger Bench," "Dead Person's Bed," "Tiny Cell" are physical punishments used in China's labor camps.  These are but a few names of the torture used in China's labor camps, according to a ground-breaking media report April 9 in a Chinese domestic media outlet, a magazine called Lens. Chinese authorities denied any mistreatment occurs in a report on April 19.

The Huffington Post said: "Based on interviews with ex-inmates, prosecutors and former and current camp officials, the 14-page [Lens] report describes prisoners being locked in tiny punishment cells, shocked with electric batons, handcuffed to two bunk beds with arms stretched wide and bound to a bench with their backs hunched over and hands and feet cuffed."

"The abuses reported by Lens at the Masanjia camp match complaints made by members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement over a decade ago," an Associated Press report said on April 9. Though none of the survivors of Masanjia interviewed by Lens identified themselves as Falun Gong practitioners, one did mention these tortures were used for "a special group."

In December 2012, a letter tucked in a Halloween kit was found in Oregon, telling the product's origin – a labor camp called "Masanjia" in Liaoning Province, China and its inhumane conditions. 

In Nov. 2012, the Beijing regime expressed willingness to reform this "re-education through labor camps" (RTL) system. Falun Gong practitioners in China have been reporting more sentencing to jails instead of to labor camps.
