Surviving World War II: Derek Robinson's Story
Debut Author Shares Hardships and Troubling Experiences of WWII Childhood in Moving New Memoir
AJAX, Ontario, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In his touching new memoir, Derek's Story (published by Trafford Publishing), debut author Derek Robinson recounts his childhood during World War II and his wartime experiences with his loving family during their struggle to survive.
Born in 1934, the last of eight children, Robinson recalls the days of his carefree youth, visiting the local blacksmith, playing in the verdant fields and orchards and attending school without a worry in the world. However, life quickly changed for him and others when war began on September 3, 1939. Because his father had been in the army for 37 years, he was often away in the years leading up to the war, training soldiers in various parts of Britain and Scotland.
Traveling and living around the country, Robinson consequently saw and experienced events that most children would never have imagined (nor would they want to at his age). Additionally, he lived with lung problems all his life, and as a child, he lost most of his schooling because he had to spend so much time in hospital. However, he managed to overcome his lack of education and took on various jobs, even learning a trade, getting married, and immigrating to Canada. He eventually started his own business, which he managed for more than 30 years before he passed it on to his son and daughter.
Learn firsthand how the war affected Robinson's family in Robinson's inspirational and masterful Derek's Story, an unflinching look at the not-so-pleasant war life filled with ration books, mandatory blackouts, German raids and plane crashes. Filled with photos and family history, this account chronicles the successes of a man who started his life surrounded by war and eventually landed a job as an eyeglass maker before he worked for the cotton mills, the gas company and the ambulance service to make ends meet.
