Survey Shows ATCA Remains the Top COTS Platform, Heavy Reading Finds
As the COTS platform market continues growing, ATCA is leading the way, says Heavy Reading Components Insider
NEW YORK, July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As the carrier-grade commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platform market continues to grow, it is apparent that Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA) is leading the way as the most widely used COTS platform, according to the latest report from Heavy Reading Components Insider (www.heavyreading.com/commchip), a paid research service of Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com).
COTS & ATCA: 2014 User Survey analyzes the use of COTS platforms by telecom equipment manufacturers, with a focus on ATCA, based on the results of an exclusive worldwide survey of engineers, designers, product managers and sales/marketing personnel that work for telecom and networking system equipment manufacturers and suppliers. The responses to our survey make it clear that these platforms are now widely used in many types of networking equipment, from the access edge to the core of the network.

"The use of carrier-grade COTS platforms for telecom systems continues to grow," says Simon Stanley, research analyst for Heavy Reading Components Insider and author of the report. "These platforms include the ATCA, MicroTCA, blade servers and rack-mount servers."
This survey goes beyond gauging the depth and breadth of technological developments, Stanley says. "It provides insights into how quickly these systems are being deployed and how many participants in the market will choose to employ third-party system integrators and software developers," he adds. "The results of this survey reflect key trends in the market for COTS platforms in telecom systems: ATCA continues to be the leading carrier-grade COTS platform."
Key findings of COTS & ATCA: 2014 User Survey include the following:
- ATCA is the leading carrier-grade COTS platform, closely followed by rack-mount servers.
- 4G EPC and 3G wireless infrastructure are key applications, together with IMS for VoLTE.
- Radisys is the leading ATCA supplier for blades and system integration, followed by Kontron, Artesyn and Advantech.
- COTS ATCA blade usage is growing further, with fewer companies using in-house designs for all blade types.
- Middleware is developed in-house by the majority of companies.
- ATCA remains the leading platform for AMCs, ahead of MicroTCA and proprietary platforms.
- MicroTCA is now stable, with 15 percent of vendors using MicroTCA-based systems.
