Survey respondents also highlighted the degree to which Tegrity saved them time with the ability to access a lecture or supplementary course content anytime, anywhere in order to make study sessions more efficient. Accessing their instructors' lectures and course content through their PC or Mac, or streamed directly to their mobile device through the Tegrity mobile app, a majority of survey respondents (85%) indicated that Tegrity made studying more effective, and the time taken for effective studying decreased for 18% of students. Three quarters of students noted that Tegrity saved them time overall, a precious commodity for busy collegians.
Lecture Capture Made Easy
Students were able to easily take advantage of the features Tegrity offers, such as intelligent searching across multiple recordings, bookmarking, contextual chat with classmates, and the ability to record assignments, through a system specifically designed to be highly intuitive. More than half of student users (52%) required no training from their institution and were able to use Tegrity easily. Further exhibiting ease of use, 64% of survey respondents accessed six or more lectures during the Fall 2010 semester.
Positive Impact on Attendance, Collaboration
Tegrity's findings showed that nearly half of instructors (49%) used lecture capture for every class. Contrary to the perception that making lecture recordings available decreases classroom attendance, 22% of Tegrity's survey respondents indicated they attended class more often. Use of Tegrity also increased the degree of collaboration for students by 29%, indicating a shift in how technology bolsters student communication and engagement.
"These survey results underscore the tremendous value of Tegrity for both students' and instructors' success in higher education," said Isaac Segal, president and chief executive officer of Tegrity, Inc. "Tegrity is not focused on simply producing a video file like traditional online lecture capture companies. Rather, we offer students the ability to search for text presented on-screen, collaborate with their peers and add notes, among other features that make studying incredibly effective and enhance the learning experience. Clearly, based on these survey results, we are successfully accomplishing these goals," he added.
Student users commented in the survey that Tegrity's lecture capture service is an "excellent tool" that is "easy to use" and that "all features are essential." Additionally, a distance learning student added that "it makes me feel more connected with the teacher and the course." Further, highlighting its intuitive functionality, a student out of school for 25 years was "very pleased with the use of Tegrity, which increased my learning experience." Another student commented, "for me, repetition is beneficial to learning and the ability to stop and go back to re-listen to points in the lecture" proved to be an integral component.
