Surgical Theater's Technology to be Showcased at the Opening of the Besta NeuroSim Center in Milan, Italy
3D navigation and augmented reality being presented at celebration of the first simulation center in Europe
CLEVELAND, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Surgical Theater, LLC, announced today that their technology will be featured at the November 24th opening of Europe's first simulation center, The Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Nazionale "C. Besta." The SuRgical Planner (SRP) and the Surgical Navigation Advanced Platform (SNAP) will be showcased at the event for their 3D navigation and augmented reality capabilities in the operating room by Dr. Joshua Bederson, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Health System in New York.
"I am honored to be invited to present our innovative work in simulation and augmented reality in the operating room at the new Simulation Center at Instituto Neurologico Besta in Milan, Italy," Dr. Bederson said. "At Mount Sinai we have been involved in multiple trail blazing projects in neurosurgery simulation. The most recent project, and one which is demonstrating an immediate application toward patient care, is the Surgical Navigation Advanced Platform, of which the neurosurgery staff at Mount Sinai and I have been using extensively in the OR. With the SNAP technology I am able to navigate around and through critical areas of normal brain to the pathology. Using the augmented reality features of the SNAP I can make normal structures transparent to see through or around them. By simulating different approaches, I use SNAP to choose the safest navigation path to treat the patient while making the smallest craniotomy. These are important factors for favorable outcomes."
"Since obtaining FDA clearance last year, Surgical Theater's technology has been utilized in more than 600 cranial cases in the U.S.," said Moty Avisar, President, Co-Founder and CEO of Surgical Theater. "Both tumor and cerebrovascular cases have been planned and navigated with our technology to date. Since receiving clearance on our OR device four months ago, the SNAP has already been purchased and utilized on a daily basis in the OR by Mount Sinai, NYU, UCLA, and other hospitals. We are very happy with the trend of adoption and utilization in the U.S. and we are now starting to establish a presence in Europe. With Surgical Theater on target to receive CE Mark approval in early 2015, the partnership at the Simulation Center at Instituto Neurologico Besta is a significant prospect."
Surgical Theater's technology is designed to be utilized in and outside of the operating room. The SRP is utilized for 3D planning of craniotomy, head position, and to optimize approaches to the pathology for Keyhole and other minimally invasive techniques. The SNAP, technology that connects to the standard OR intra-operative navigation systems, imports the 3D plan from the SRP and enhances 3D navigation and situational awareness by establishing multiple views and rotating and interacting with the navigation image to see behind pathology and vital structures. The technology makes tumors, vessels and tissue transparent to improve visualization and allow surgeons to "see what you can't see." The SNAP received FDA clearance in June 2014 and the SRP in February 2013.

Since Surgical Theater obtained FDA clearance on their first product, SRPs have been installed in leading research and teaching hospitals across the United States. Hospitals include: University Hospitals Case Medical Center, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone Medical Center, and others.
Surgical Theater has received generous recognition from the media. The company was named in Forbes as one of 10 Health Tech Companies Changing The World and as Inc's Top 10 Tech Companies Impacting Humanity. Surgical Theater was also featured on CNN as a breakthrough technology in surgery, and also recently featured on FOX News and Extra.
About Surgical Theater, LLC
Surgical Theater, LLC is a privately held, Cleveland, Ohio-based startup that produces virtual realistic and interactive scenes where surgeons are able to plan, rehearse and tele-mentor their specific missions. The company provides the opportunity for novice and experienced surgeons to not only "pre-live the future" by planning their procedure prior to the actual surgery, similar to what pilots do prior to flying complex missions, where such purposeful practice or warm-up has been shown to benefit both novice and experienced surgeons; But to also provide for the opportunity to "See what you can't see" utilizing 3D navigation and augmented reality in the operating room.
