SurePure Teams up with the University of Johannesburg to Determine Efficacy of Patented Turbulator Technology in Combating Mycotoxins
Early Tests Point to Promising Results in Lowering Mycotoxin Levels Prevalent in Beverages in South Africa
NEW YORK, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SurePure, Inc. (OTCBB:SURP), a global leader in liquid photopurification, today announced that it has teamed up with the University of Johannesburg to determine the efficacy of its Turbulator technology to combat the prevalence of mycotoxins in commercially available beverages in South Africa.
Using its patented Turbulator technology, SurePure uses UV-C light to purify microbiologically sensitive liquids such as wine, fruit juice and milk. UVC light has shown efficacy in reducing the levels of mycotoxins and the SurePure technology appears especially promising in addressing the needs in South Africa. There are indications that mycotoxins are prevalent in commercially available beverages in South Africa. A study by Dutton et al, 2012 of the South African dairy industry showed all milk samples from sample dairy farms were positive for aflatoxin M, while retail milk was also frequently contaminated.
Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring chemicals produced by certain molds. They can grow on a variety of different crops and be present in numerous foodstuffs including cereals, milk, apple juice and coffee. According to the UK Food Standards Authority, mycotoxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects in humans. Aflatoxins, including aflatoxin B1 are the most toxic and have been shown to be genotoxic, which means that they can damage DNA and cause cancer in animal species. In addition, there is evidence that they can cause liver cancer in humans. Other mycotoxins have a range of other health effects including kidney damage, gastrointestinal disturbances, reproductive disorders or suppression of the immune system.
"We are pleased to team up with the University of Johannesburg, a global leader in scientific research and innovation, and leverage their incredible intellectual capital to help solve this serious public health issue in South Africa," said Steve Miller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for SurePure, Inc. "Now that we have found the right local partner, we are looking forward to pioneering this technology together in South Africa and continue to make strides towards enhancing our position as the leader in liquid photopurification."
