Superchunk to open 24th Annual Cucalorus Festival, tix on sale now!
Film Festival also announces first selections
WILMINGTON, N.C., Aug. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Cucalorus announces Superchunk and a sampling of major events for the 24th annual Cucalorus Festival, November 7-11, 2018, in downtown Wilmington, NC. The twenty-four-year-old celebration is internationally recognized as "One of the Coolest Film Festivals in the World," a creative oasis among festivals with a growing schedule of music, dance, theatre, and a multi-day technology conference.
"Cucalorus is evolving in really fun ways with more music and bigger events, especially on the tech side. Superchunk is a great way to launch this year's festival. I can't think of another band that has done more to shape the indie scene, so we felt they were the perfect fit," said Chief Instigating Officer Dan Brawley.
Superchunk released their eleventh album What a Time to be Alive this February, which NPR calls "a full-throated, unapologetic response to a united state of turmoil during the last year, but it's one of the most fun and contagious records Superchunk has ever made."
Superchunk's Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance launched Merge Records in 1989, which Spin credited for Durham's transformation into a thriving indie-rock town. The label boasts acts like Arcade Fire, M Ward and Spoon. Fans recognize Superchunk's Jim Wilbur and Jon Wurster from solo projects and collaborations including Portastatic, the Mountain Goats, and The Best Show.
"SuperChunk is relevant now more than ever, and somehow continues to bring more energy to the stage than ever—now everyone pogo!" said Cucalorus Board Member Norwood Cheek—musician, filmmaker, and 10x10 founder.
Dance-a-lorus opens the festival Wednesday at Thalian Hall, followed by Superchunk at Brooklyn Arts Center. The Connect Conference opens Thursday, covering FinTech, HealthTech, GigTech, Startups and Social Entrepreneurship. Cucalorus also announces Poor Jane (NC premiere), John Whitehead's Don't Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops' Story (NC premiere), Ann Lupo's In Reality (Southeastern premiere) and Douglas Tirola's doc Brewmaster.
