Super Tory Takes Center Stage at IPSSW 2017
Train on the World's Most Advanced Neonatal Patient Simulator
MIAMI, May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- When the world's largest pediatric and perinatal simulation conference opens tomorrow in Boston, all eyes will be on Gaumard Scientific, where Super Tory, the world's most advanced neonatal patient simulator, will cry, move and gasp for breath like a real newborn in distress.
Super Tory's unparalleled anatomical and physiological accuracy will be on full display at the 9th International Pediatric Simulation Symposia and Workshop, June 1-3 at Boston University's George Sherman Union.
Attendees will view Super Tory's lifelike limb and facial movements and programmable skin coloration that simulate the range of visual cues seen in ill as well as healthy newborns. Starting with APGAR scoring, every visual assessment provides a wealth of health information.
Attendees also will be able to use a tablet to control the new manikin's breakthrough respiratory system, which is so realistic that it accurately responds to real mechanical ventilation.
Nearly 10 percent of newborns need some form of respiratory assistance after birth and close to one percent require resuscitation measures. Respiratory problems are one of the leading causes for neonatal intensive care unit admissions.
"This is the first newborn simulator developed to meet the challenges of neonatal care specialists training in real environments," Gaumard executive vice president John Eggert says. "Super Tory allows teams to rehearse resuscitation and respiratory care protocols in situ using real equipment to improve speed and efficiency."
"Super Tory's internal and lifelike lungs feature programmable levels of compliance and can achieve normal chest rise with as little as 15 cmH2O or can illustrate the high recoil associated with stiff lungs. For the first time, students and professionals can simulate all stages of respiratory management, including diagnosis, treatment, weaning and rehabilitation, as they would in real situations."
To shorten hospital stays and improve outcomes, care providers must diagnose and treat conditions quickly as the newborn is moved through the continuum of care. To that end, Super Tory is wireless and tetherless to ensure continuity of care as she moves from the labor and delivery room to the NICU. She can be utilized in training scenarios anytime, anywhere and remains fully functional in transit due to an internal, rechargeable battery that provides up to eight hours of operation -- an unprecedented technological feat in a simulator that is just eight pounds and 21 inches.
This is the first neonatal simulator to offer heart and lung interaction as well as motion in a mobile platform -- capabilities that allow Super Tory to simulate complex pathologies and respond to interventions with unparalleled realism.
Super Tory can be assessed for early onset sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, pneumonia with pneumothorax and other conditions using real vital signs monitors. Critical metrics such as ECG-derived respiratory monitoring, pre- and post-ductal SpO2, NIBP and Cap refill can be evaluated in real time. And Super Tory can be paced and defibrillated using real energy, just as in a clinical live situation. Her facial expressions change and her chest wall motion and programmable arm and leg movements provide valuable information for care givers.
All told, Super Tory includes ten scenarios and an accompanying guidebook that cover both common and rare clinical cases seen throughout the continuum of care of neonates.
Super Tory further expands the Gaumard neonatal high fidelity product line, which already includes Newborn Hal® and Newborn Tory®, for those who demand an even higher level of fidelity including physical movement and actual mechanical ventilation. These features enable learners to experience advanced-level scenarios as in actual clinical practice.
