Sunshine Health Employees Raise Funds, Awareness and Walk for a Cure Throughout October
SUNRISE, Fla., Oct. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunshine Health employees are promoting the benefits of early detection for breast cancer with Susan B. Komen Foundation across the state.
Over 200 Sunshine Health employees are walking for "Race for a Cure" in Tampa, Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, Orlando and Pensacola. All Sunshine Health offices are collecting donations for "Pennies for Breast Cancer" and all proceeds raised during the month will go to the Susan B. Komen Foundation.
"Breast cancer is an illness that afflicts our Sunshine Health plan members, our employees and their families. As such, participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month events is personal for us," said Chris Paterson, CEO and plan president of Sunshine Health. "It is our pleasure to work with the Susan B. Komen Foundation, an organization that is transforming how this cancer is detected and treated, and supports those battling the disease, the survivors and their families."
According to the Susan B. Komen Foundation, aside from certain skin cancers, breast cancer is the single most common cancer to affect women without regard for race or ethnicity. Remarkably, one in eight women in the U.S. will receive a breast cancer diagnosis during her lifetime. It is estimated that more than 240,000 women and 2,600 men in the U.S. will receive an invasive breast cancer diagnosis before the end of the year. The U.S. witnessed a 37 percent decline in breast cancer deaths between 1990 and 2013 as a result of awareness, early detection and effective treatment.
