Sudan's Historic Referendum Successfully Concludes
WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The historic Referendum comes to a successful conclusion today. Officials of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC) have reportedly noted that the 60% threshold needed to make this exercise valid and genuinely reflective of the Southerners' aspiration had been reached a few days ago. They've also acknowledged and praised the smooth process and the peaceful atmosphere that continues to pervade this monumental occasion. The counting process will promptly begin and the results are scheduled for announcement around mid-February.
Sudan yet again commends the wise voices within the international community, those who are tirelessly investing positive energy into ensuring a successful process for the sake of peace. By encouraging peace, everybody wins, and this is a fact that those obstructionists and detractors fail to understand. They've instead been waging fear-mongering and divisive campaigns that only seek to undermine all that the people of Sudan have achieved. They invoke political and religious differences to incite further divisions and to make the search for peace in Sudan, and indeed the world, that much more difficult. The moment a significant stride is made, they unleash a rhetoric that can only be seen as malicious. The voice of reason must prevail and these crisis-fomenters must be silenced by the world's determination to see peace flourish.
We must remember that one challenge after another, the Sudanese leadership has been able to overcome significant obstacles to on this path towards peace. This encouraging fact of perseverance should reinforce the faith of the peace loving world in Sudan.
