Success for All Foundation Honored at White House Showcase

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Success for All Foundation's program, "Success for All" was one of 30 proven elementary, secondary and adult learning programs invited to a "What Works Showcase" at the White House as part of President Barack Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative.

Success For All's programs are used in 1,000 schools nationwide, in 48 states, affecting 330,00 students, 26,000 teachers and more than 2 million alumni in colleges.

SFA co-founders Dr. Nancy Madden and Dr. Robert Slavin attended the event along with SFA coach Alex Rodriguez.

Principal Ingrid Bynum of Patrick Henry Elementary School in Alexandria, Va., which has used the Success For All program for four years, attended the event and shared her school's incredible gains on the Virginia Standards of Learning Test.

We have worked hard to implement the program so that it benefits all of our students in a meaningful way. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to present at the White House and to be recognized for our achievement in reading and our gains over the past four years," said Principal Bynum.

Also attending from Patrick Henry Elementary School were Andaiye Cammon, vice principal, and Linda Ricks, SFA facilitator. Fifth-grade students Isaiah Robinson and William Gomez spoke about how SFA helped them become super readers.

The MBK What Works Showcase was hosted by the White House Office of Social Innovation and My Brother's Keeper (MBK), along with the U.S. Department of Education, Campaign for Black Male Achievement, Laura and John Arnold Foundation, and Results for America. The groups participated in a science fair meets demo day style event. The groups were chosen for their innovative and evidence-based programs.

Success For All's Featured Program

Success for All is a whole-school improvement approach for elementary and middle schools. It is designed to ensure that all students reach third grade reading at grade level, and then continue to grow. A relentless school-wide focus on student success enables teachers to work together to develop instructional practices built on powerful cooperative learning to actively engage students in their own and each other's learning. Tutoring further supports struggling readers. Strategies to engage parents preventatively address barrier issues such as attendance and health. Schoolwide goal setting and progress monitoring, combined with extensive peer-supported coaching, build a continuous improvement process that ensures growing success.

Students in second and third grade participating in Success for All for three years showed substantial gains in reading comprehension (averaging more than a quarter of a standard deviation more than controls) in three large multisite studies involving schools serving primarily African-American and Hispanic students, and English learners.

Success for All has reduced the gap between white and minority students by half for third graders.

In a longitudinal study that that looked at students in eighth grade – three years after leaving their Success for All school - 9% of students from Success for All schools had ever been retained while 23% of control students had been retained. In addition, time in special education was reduced by one-third for Success for All students compared to controls.

President Obama launched the My Brother's Keeper initiative in 2014 to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential.

MBK's cradle-to-college-and-career-goals include:

Getting a healthy start and entering school ready to learn; and
Reading at grade level by third grade.
