MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The McLean, Virginia, based Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC), which covers Virginia, Delaware, most of Maryland, and the District of Columbia, donated a check for $350,000 to the American Diabetes Association recently as a way to show their support in the fight to stop diabetes.
"Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and we are honored to have the Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC) and their franchise owners in the Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware areas join us to help Stop Diabetes," said Greg Elfers, Chief Field Development Officer for the American Diabetes Association. "As SDC's charity of choice, their support allows us to continue to provide invaluable programs and resources across the country to prevent diabetes and help people lead healthier lives."
SUBWAY® franchisees all over the globe play an active role in their communities throughout the year, supporting various causes, local schools, and programs. By the end of each year, thousands of sandwiches and other food items, as well as funds raised, are donated to charity walks and organizations in need.
The donation marks the fourth year that SDC, and the more than 1,250 SUBWAY® restaurants that are part of the SDC, has designated the American Diabetes Association as their charity of choice, bringing the total charitable contribution to more than $1.4 million during that time.
"Our support of the American Diabetes Association is a real team effort and a great way to give back in a meaningful way to the communities that support us," says David Dickerson, VP of Operations SDC. "Everyone at SDC is very proud of the level of fund raising that our franchisees and their teams are able to achieve each year for this important cause."
The funds were raised through two major annual events, the sale of Stop Diabetes hands and the SDC's 17th annual golf tournament.
