Already the fastest and friendliest workers in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry, the Sub Jammers are judged on speed, sandwich appearance, content distribution and formula accuracy. Sandwich Artists™ taking part in the Sub Jammers competition won regional events leading up to the championship round at the annual Convention.
Salvador, who won with a score of 51.15, has been with SUBWAY® for 13 years and said he loves helping customers. The scoring is based on the time in seconds to make a sandwich with points added for discrepancies.
The next challenge for Salvador will be to join a large team of his fellow Sandwich Artists™, as well as Famous Fan Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and other special guests, in New York City on August 15 to set the Guinness World Record for most sandwiches made at one time!
Joe Chaves, Director of Operations for SUBWAY®, said the brand enjoys the opportunity to highlight the Sandwich Artists™ - who he called the "cornerstone of the SUBWAY® experience" - and showcase their sandwich making talents.
"This is certainly one of the most exciting highlights of our annual convention," said Joe. "And allows us to say 'Thanks' for all the hard work the Sandwich Artists™ do to provide a positive dining experience and outstanding customer care for every customer that walks into a SUBWAY® restaurant. It is also fun to see Sandwich Artists™ from around the world come together and make new friends while competing to see who can make the best sandwich in the quickest amount of time!"
Salvador dethroned Bryon Shea, of Neenah, Wisconsin, who won the competition in 2011 and 2009. Bryon, who has been in the SUBWAY® system for 11 years and manages two SUBWAY® restaurants, finished second this year with a score of 51.6. Overall, Bryon, who is an avid biker and walker, has finished first, second or third in each of the past six years.
For winning the competition, which was sponsored by Schreiber Foods and Ventura Foods, LLC, Salvador was presented with a check for $3,000. Bryon took home the $2,000 second place prize while Jenni Chapman, of Galesville, Wisconsin, received $1,000 for her third place finish with a score of 52.12.
Jenni, who is a volleyball fanatic who has been in the SUBWAY® system for 16 years, said the competition was serious – but fun, especially the opportunity to meet with Sandwich Artists™ from eight other countries.
The next 10 finishers were:
4- Sharon Hall of Waco, Texas, a Bingo! buff and two-time Sub Jammer champion who still holds the record for making a sandwich in a blazing-quick time of 38.6 seconds; 5- Lilli Phonphakwaen of Stuttgart, Germany, whose hobby is shopping and dancing; 6- Renee Bell of Kansas City, Missouri, whose hobby is anything athletic; 7- Jackie Adams of Killeen, Texas, whose hobby is gardening; 8- Stephanie Wagner of Blue Ridge, Virginia, whose hobbies are reading and traveling; 9- Ashley Knight of Queensland, Australia, whose hobbies are racing BMX and mountain bikes; 10- Lisa Mulligan of Gainesville, Florida, whose hobby is going to the beach; 11- Ashley Lewis, of Pittsburg, Kansas, whose hobby is softball; 12- Ryan Pedersen of Lewiston, Idaho, whose hobby is basketball; and 13- Missina Sharp of Carl Junction, Missouri, whose hobby is couponing.
