The firm's work earned a Project Achievement award in the Outstanding Rehabilitation Projects and Commitment to Community Revitalization category. The award was given to STV and the New York City School Construction Authority, the firm's client on this project.
Built in 1917, the five-story school and grounds are protected under the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) guidelines for historic structures. The school building is a stone and brick structure noteworthy for its classical design.
The challenge for STV's team was to design a structure that would look compatible with the existing school building in terms of materials, massing and scale and be acceptable to both the SHPO and the surrounding community.
STV designed a 20,000-square foot, four-story classroom addition for the high school that includes 16 classrooms, teacher offices, bathrooms and egress stairs.
STV also provided architectural and engineering services for the complete renovation of the 778-seat auditorium with a balcony in the existing school building. The renovation encompassed the removal of temporary classrooms built in the back of the auditorium on both the orchestra and balcony levels and a complete refurbishment of the auditorium interior to restore it to its original appearance. The refurbishment included new seats, stained glass windows, lighting, theatrical riggings and curtains and interior finishes.
The Historic Preservation Awards honor excellence in the protection and rejuvenation of New York's historic and cultural resources.
