Study Shows Minimally Invasive Procedure Alleviates Pain and Improves Mobility in Pain Patients
NEW YORK, Jan. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Pain Medicine recently published a study in the Pain Medicine Journal, which shows the long term safety and effectiveness of Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD), an outpatient procedure for people suffering from Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS). The study shows that given the societal aging trend, utilization of MILD will likely grow to include even larger numbers of individuals. Its use will yield meaningful savings in healthcare costs. The systematic safety review report states that MILD has long-lasting, positive effects on patients suffering from LSS.
Dr. Luis M. Fandos, MD, an anesthesiologist and interventional pain physician, treats patients suffering from this disabling back pain using MILD for relief. He is co-founder of New York Pain Consultants, a full-service pain management center with three locations on Long Island.
"More than 1.2 million people in the United States are impacted by LSS each year. This new research further supports MILD as a viable alternative to major spinal surgery. At New York Pain Consultants we have seen the MILD procedure lower complication rates and decrease recovery times, thus serving patients better than open surgical procedures," stated Dr. Fandos.
Dr. Fandos continued, "The results from MILD speak for themselves. Patients who were unable to stand or walk except for minutes at a time and/or were experiencing numbness down their legs and backs saw marked improvement in the week following the MILD procedure. The patients' pain levels were reduced 75 – 90 percent and patients were able to walk much longer distances than prior to the procedure."
LSS can make everyday tasks such as grocery shopping, walking and standing for short periods of time unbearable. Unlike after major back surgery, MILD patients generally return to their typical routine within a few days.
