Studies Continue to Demonstrate Long-Term Benefits of Weight Loss Surgeries Notes Dr. Feiz and Associates
Various studies further bolster the research supporting the efficacy of weight loss surgeries
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study performed at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, concluded that weight loss surgery appears to have an unexpected side benefit -- it may improve urinary incontinence symptoms in women. Noted weight loss surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S. and his team at Dr. Feiz and Associates would like to point out that this study is just one of many weight loss studies performed since 2011 which demonstrate the positive outcomes for severely obese individuals of having a bariatric procedure such as gastric banding. Last year, a medical study published in Annals of Surgery recognized that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band) is both safe and effective 15 years after surgery, and in 2012 a study reported by Dr. Pontiroli at Universita Degli Studi de Milano and San Paolo Hospital, Milan, unveiled that lap band surgery is both safe and effective 17 years after surgery.
In the 2013 study, scholars from Monash University reviewed the results of gastric banding in more than 3200 patients while Dr. Pontiroli's study was based on data from 1,490 patients. Both studies demonstrated that most patients maintained a weight loss close to half of their excess weight; they were also less likely to die of cardiovascular or non-cardiovascular causes and were less likely to develop new cases of type 2 diabetes. In the recent study by UCSF's Dr. Leslee Subak, the women lost almost 30 percent of their body weight, and about two-thirds who had incontinence at the start were cured at one year with that amount of weight loss.
