Student Access Student Choice Coalition Issues Veterans Day Statement
WASHINGTON, Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In commemoration of Veterans Day, the Student Access Student Choice Coalition today issued the below statement by Greg Shaw who served in Army Infantry prior to and post 9/11, and is a graduate of Keiser University:
"One of the ways we can honor military service in modern America is to ensure that our veterans get the educational opportunities they miss out on during their deployment. For many young people who serve, those opportunities are often found at career colleges – schools that emphasize particular degrees that lead to specific careers.
"Veterans disproportionately benefit from career colleges because these institutions provide greater flexibility as they balance family, work and school. Unfortunately, a proposal pending at the Department of Education would make enrolling at these schools much harder for veterans.
"The proposal – innocuously entitled 'gainful employment' would limit Federal funding for schools whose students have an unduly high ratio of debt to post-graduation income. Career college students, including student veterans, are adversely and unfairly impacted by this proposal.
"If this proposal is adopted, many student veterans will find themselves unable to continue their education at the college of their choice and at a disadvantage to their civilian counterparts. That's no way to honor their service."
The Student Access Student Choice Coalition is a diverse coalition of educators, students, employers, nonprofit organizations, elected officials and others dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for all Americans by giving them access to important post-secondary education and job training at career colleges and universities.
