Stroock's Charles Moerdler Confirmed as Member of the Metropolitan Transit Authority
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, a national law firm with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, announced that the New York Senate confirmed Governor David Paterson's appointment of Stroock partner Charles G. Moerdler to a six-year term as a Member of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) of the State of New York on December 7, 2010.
Mr. Moerdler has extensive public sector experience. Currently, he serves as a Member of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, a Member of the New York City Housing Development Corporation and a Member of the New York City Board of Collective Bargaining. By appointment of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, Mr. Moerdler serves as Vice Chair of the Committee on Character and Fitness of Applicants for Admission to the Bar and as a Member of the Departmental Disciplinary Committee. Mr. Moerdler previously served as Commissioner of Housing and Buildings of the City of New York and as Chairman and Commissioner of the New York State Insurance Fund.
Mr. Moerdler continues to chair the Litigation Department of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. His practice is wide-ranging, including complex litigation (including securities and antitrust law), health care, real estate and land use, labor law, and Federal and State appellate practice. He is a Member of the American Academy of Special Masters, having served as a Special Master in the Federal Courts and as an Arbitrator and Mediator on numerous occasions. He has also served as Chair of Bank Austria Creditanstalt (USA) and as a Director of the New York Post. He is a Member of the Editorial Board of the New York Law Journal.
Mr. Moerdler's community activities include service as a Trustee of St. Barnabas Hospital, as Co-Chair of the Governing Council of the American Jewish Congress, and as Land Use Chair of Community Board No. 8, which he previously served as Chairman.
Mr. Moerdler received his JD and LLB from the Fordham University School of Law (where he was an Associate Editor of the Fordham Law Review) and his BS from Long Island University. Mr. Moerdler was born in Paris, France and is a Holocaust survivor.
In accepting Governor Paterson's appointment, Mr. Moerdler noted, "An improved, efficient and cost-effective mass transit system is essential if the New York Metropolitan area is to remain vital and energized. I hope I can make a significant contribution to the achievement of that goal."
